Westfield Committees

Our New Jersey worship congregation is managed through committees. These committees are as follows:

Care

The Care Committee attends to the needs of the individuals in the community through financial aid and referrals.

Collectors

The Finance Committee works along with the Clerks of the Committees to prepare bi-annual donation request letters.

Finance

Our Finance Committee works with the meeting treasurer to prepare the annual budget, ensure the financial records are properly maintained, and oversees other financial aspects such as the Meeting’s investments. The committee is also responsible for advising the Meeting on how to finance its activities and use its economic resources.

Hospitality

The Hospitality Committee is responsible for making the Meeting a warm and welcoming environment.

Nominating

Appointed by an Adhoc naming committee, the Nominating Committee is responsible for nominating officers and committee members for approval by the Monthly Meeting for Business. If you have any suggestions on nominations, please contact the committee.

Outreach

The mission of the Outreach Committee is to increase public awareness of the Westfield Monthly Meeting. They serve to encourage interaction between the Meeting and the wider community while attracting new Members and Attenders.

The Outreach Committee maintains a robust web and social media presence and participates in service projects in the community and events held at the Meeting. They are public witnesses of Quaker values and help Members to create a welcoming atmosphere sensitive to the position of visitors and seekers new to the Meeting. They also reach out to groups beyond the predominant demographic to grow our inclusive and diverse community.

Peace and Social Concerns

Many of our Members are drawn to Westfield Monthly Meeting because of our commitment to justice. Our Peace and Social Concerns Committee strives to recommend actions that address Peace, Social Witness, Equality & Environmental issues and concerns. We are committed to being an inclusive worship community that is welcoming to all.

As a congregation, we encourage all to participate in supporting Quaker organizations, such as Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), consistent with Friends Testimonies. Suzanne Day is our go-to contact for FCNL.

Participation could include monetary contributions or volunteering time or donating products to a local Food Bank or other charitable organization. We also encourage letter and email writing to our local and federal New Jersey government representatives. We believe in the strength of our inclusive worship community and will always encourage our members to use their voices to better the lives of others in Southern New Jersey.

WMM Property

The WMM Property Committee is responsible for the development, operation, maintenance, repair, and overall stewardship of the physical assets of the Meeting.

To fulfill this responsibility, the committee performs the following functions:

  1. Monitor the physical condition of the meetinghouse and grounds, including the cemetery, to identify and document needs and issues requiring corrective action and to propose and undertake measures, including available options, to address such needs, utilizing the services of the Meeting’s Caretaker as appropriate.

  2. Identify the need or opportunity for enhancement and improvement of the meetinghouse and grounds and develop strategies, including options, to effect such changes, considering purpose, methods, and cost. Oversee the execution of actions to deliver said enhancement and improvement.

  3. As appropriate, engage and manage the services of outside organizations/vendors to develop and execute physical plant maintenance, repair, or improvement projects, while assuring the prudent use of resources and consideration of minority enterprises.

  4. Oversee the practice of permitting the use of the meetinghouse and grounds by external parties to assure safety and the protection of physical assets.

The above functions are performed to enrich and support the spiritual life of the Meeting, the integrity of the natural world, and the welfare of the Meeting and the surrounding community. All actions proposed and taken by the committee or first recommended to and approved by the Meeting, either collectively through the annual budget approval process or, when needed, individually at Meeting for Business.

Worship and Religious Education

This committee has a twofold purpose. First, the committee is responsible for First Day of School activities and the promotion of religious education for everyone in the WMM community. Secondly, the committee fosters and strengthens the spiritual life of the Meeting, especially its meetings for worship.
